New Delhi: Increasing the enrolment rate and making higher education more accessible to the marginalised and economically backward groups are among the issues to be discussed at a national conference of vice chancellors starting here on Tuesday.
The two-day conference, being organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and which will be inaugurated by HRD Minister Arjun Singh, will look at ways to raise the gross enrolment ratio in higher education to 15 per cent, according to an official release here on Tuesday.
It will discuss how to cover aspects such as establishment of new universities and colleges and strengthening and upgrading the existing institutions of higher education.
Another theme to be discussed at the conference is removing barriers in access to higher education for the deprived, marginalised social groups and the economically backward.
The other issues that will be taken up at the meeting are improving quality of education, academic and administrative reforms and private participation in higher education and financing.
Over 400 vice chancellors from all universities across the country are scheduled to attend the conference.
The national conference is a culmination of four regional conferences that the UGC had organised in Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and New Delhi.
