An illegal under-construction seven-storey building collapsed in Bengaluru, killing five people and injuring several others. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the construction was illegal and promised strict action against those involved.

Five people died, while five others were injured after an under-construction seven-storey building collapsed in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Seven people were rescued from the debris of the collapsed structure. The fresh death toll was confirmed by D Devaraja, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Bengaluru), who also said the injured were admitted to Hosmat and North Hospitals.

The building collapsed at a time when the city was grappling with incessant rain. Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who visited the incident spot late on Tuesday, today said the building was illegally constructed.

A video, widely shared on social media, showed the moment when the building collapsed.

Rescue vans from the fire and emergency department were pressed into operations as soon as the information about the incident was received.

Devaraja, who had arrived at the spot soon after, on Tuesday said nearly 20 people were trapped, while 14 workers were rescued. Five were missing as the rescue operations had begun the same day.

Visuals from today morning showed rescue operations underway on the spot.

BENGALURU BUILDING WHICH COLLAPSED WAS ILLEGAL

DK Shivakumar visited the spot and took stock of the situation. In an X post, the Deputy Chief Minister wrote, “Last night, I visited and inspected the site where the under-construction building collapsed and the workers were trapped under the debris at Babusab Palya in Kammanahalli. It is a big crime to construct a building illegally in this way on 60/40 land. Apparently, the owner of the building is constructing the building without plan approval and strict action will be taken against the culprits.”

“I have ordered action against the owners of buildings constructed illegally without permission in Bangalore. This incident is a lesson for us. To prevent such incidents from reoccurring in the future, it will be made mandatory to obtain permission for the buildings and a team will be deployed to monitor the buildings under construction,” he added.

Also talking to reporters on Tuesday, Shivakumar said, “I have been told that there was no permission and illegal activities were going on. We will take strict action against the owner, contractors and everyone (of the alleged building).”

“In the entire Bengaluru, we will see to it that we come up with a decision, wherever such illegal constructions are going on, we will stop it immediately. I will conduct a big survey on this,” he said.

“We will stop all these illegal constructions and I will also instruct the registrars to not accept the transfer of such illegal properties which have no plan sanctions. We will take strict action against this,” the Deputy Chief Minister added.
