Volleyball stalwarts honoured

Some of the famous names in Kerala volleyball were honoured at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday. At a function organised as part of the Australian volleyball club Norwood Bears’ visit to the city, Arjuna awardees K C Elamma (1975), Cyril C Velloor (1986), K Udaya Kumar (1991), along with former internationals S Gopinath, Thrissur Range IG, P S Abdul Razaaq, Kerala State Sports Council secretary, N C Chacko, sales tax deputy commissioner, V A Moideen Naina, Customs, and S A Madhu, Central Excise, were felicitated.

 The other two living Arjuna Award winners from Kerala - Saly Joseph (1984) and K J Kapil Dev (2010) - were unable to make it to the function along with IG Jose George and Customs official A M Joji.

 Their mementos were collected by their representatives. Kochi Zone Central Excise and Customs chief commissioner Ashok Kumar Kaushal, Kochi Customs Commissioner Dr K N Raghavan and Kochi Central Excise Commissioner Jagadeesh Singh gave away the mementos.

 The Adelaide-based Norwood Bears were in the city as part of a programme initiated by the Australia-India Council to foster cultural ties between the countries. Apart from playing an exhibition match with Cochin Spikers, the Bears had interacted with the inmates of Janaseva Sisubhavan in Aluva. Prior to the match, they had also conducted a coaching clinic for the Ernakulam district under-18 team.

 The event was organised by Customs and Central Excise in partnership with Regional Sports Centre and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
