THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition staged a walkout in the Assembly at the fag end of the day’s proceedings after Finance Minister K M Mani misquoted a clarification made by CPM’s Thomas Isaac on the issue of suspension of Suryanelli sex scam victim from service.In fact, the Opposition was struggling all through the day to corner the government on various issues, including handling of the ship-boat collision issue and the attack on fishermen.Opposition Leader Achuthanandan’s apprehensions about Kerala losing precious river water owing to the inter-linking of rivers were also addressed by the Finance and Law Minister.Responding to Achuthanandan’s query whether the government had anything to offer as relief to the Sooryanelli sex scam victim, who was allegedly framed in a case of financial embezzlement, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy put the Opposition on the defensive saying that it was the LDF Government’s Finance Minister, Thomas Isaac, who was behind registering a case against the girl.Responding to this, Isaac clarified that it was on the advice of the then Chief Minister that the girl was transferred instead of giving a severe punishment.When Isaac said that the girl was arrested from the road in broad daylight while she was going to her office with an ulterior motive to weaken her case in the Supreme Court, the Chief Minister reiterated that it was Isaac who was behind registering a case against her. At this point, Mani misquoting Isaac’s clarification said that it was at the instance of the then Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan that a case was registered against the girl. This provoked the Opposition, and sensing trouble, Mani retracted half-heartedly.The woman members were heard asking the government not to ‘insult womanhood’ on the International Women’s Day.
