Large parts of North India are reeling under extreme heatwave conditions with temperatures rising above 45 degrees in many places. Haryana’s Sirsa observed the hottest day with 47.8 degrees on May 21 followed by Rajasthan’s Pilani (47.2) and Punjab’s Bhatinda (46.6).

Uttar Pradesh’s Agra also found a place in the top ten hottest cities with 46.6 degrees followed by Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam (45.6), Gujarat’s Surendranagar (45.4), Maharashtra’s Akola (44.0), Chhattisgarh’s Durg (43.6), Himachal Pradesh’s Una (42.4), and Odisha’s Nuapada (42.2).

National capital Delhi also witnessed soaring temperatures as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for the next five days, till May 23, in Delhi and its adjoining states. In a circular, the Directorate of Education in Delhi directed all schools to observe summer vacation from May 11 to June 30 for this academic year due to prevalent heatwave conditions.

The IMD has said the prevailing conditions are a cause of concern for vulnerable people such as infants, the elderly and those with chronic diseases. The weather agency suggested people avoid heat exposure and dehydration by drinking sufficient water and consuming ORS and homemade drinks like lassi, lemon water and buttermilk to keep themselves hydrated.

Tips To Stay Safe In Heatwave Conditions

Dr Mohan Kumar Singh, Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram, said exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration can result from exposure to extreme temperatures and heatwaves.

Sweating depletes the body of fluids and electrolytes, leading to dehydration and an imbalance in vital minerals. This can hinder the body’s ability to regulate temperature, resulting in symptoms like headaches, nausea, weakness, and dizziness. If untreated, it can progress to heat exhaustion or potentially fatal heatstroke.

Dr Singh advised that avoiding sun exposure, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing and use coolers or air conditioners will help avoid health issues due to extreme temperatures.
