PALAKKAD: Wind energy projects, which were on the back burner after the Suzlon related controversy over the Adivasi land issue in Attapadi, has gathered steam again in the state with the private sector INox Renewables Limited and the the public sector National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) geared up to set up wind farms. The NTPC, which has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kerala Government to generate 200 MW of wind energy in the state, is also scouting for land in Palakkad and Attapadi, sources said. INox Renewable Limited, a subsidiary of Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited, will also set up a 22 MW wind farm in the Kinfra industrial park at Kanjikode. “We have submitted our proposal to the Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology(Anert) in Thiruvananthapuram and they have asked for one or two queries and it will be replied soon. We have been allotted around 27.5 acres of land by Kinfra in 2010. There will be 11 machines and it is the first time in Kerala that 2 MW machines were being installed,” a company source of Inox Renewables Limited told Express. He said that the machines used in the Suzlon Wind Farm at Attapadi and the Vestas Wind Farm at Ramakalmedu in Idukki were of a lower capacity. The hilly terrains made the use of larger capacity wind mills difficult in these wind farms. “A power purchase agreement has been signed and power will be sold at `3.64 per unit to the common grid of the KSEB. There will not be any third party sale and they will be operated as independent power projects by INox Renewables Limited,” he said.
