New Delhi: Keeping one eye on the schedules of the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies starting in March, the India-Pakistan hockey Test series has been forced to be postponed.
The decision was taken in consultation with the Pakistan Hockey Federation, Indian Hockey Federation secretary K Jyothikumaran said.
"PHF Secretary Akhtarul Islam had called me yesterday to tell that it would be ideal to hold the series in the latter part of April (because of the World Cup). Also, during the inauguration of the Premier Hockey League, IHF President KPS
Gill had said that it would be proper to organise the series after April 10," Jothikumaran told PTI on Thursday.
The back-to-back eight-match Test series was to start in Pakistan where the first four games were scheduled to be played and the next four in India thereafter during the same time when the Cricket World Cup starts in the Caribbean.
However, the IHF and the Pakistan Hockey Federation will reschedule the event at the Asian Hockey Confederation Congress later in January.
"We (IHF and PHF officials) are meeting during the AHC Congress in Kuala Lumpur on January 13 and 14. There we will decide on the dates," he said.
It was also rumoured that the Test series had to be postponed due to lack of sponsorships, some of whom are also part of the Cricket World Cup, but the IHF secretary was quick to rubbish it.
