Zidane wants 2006 World Cup to retire
France midfielder Zinedine Zidane wants to bow out of international football by lifting the German World Cup trophy in July.

France midfielder and Real Madrid star player Zinedine Zidane wants to bow out of international football by lifting the German World Cup trophy in July.

"It would be good if I could finish my international career in the French team with a big and beautiful success. I want to become World champion again - that's my goal," the 33-year-old midfielder was quoted as saying by German football magazine Kicker on Monday.

Zidane is best known for scoring the winning goal against Brazil in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea had the French squad performing miserably. It failed to even move to the second round way past the underdogs in its group -- Uruguay, Denmark and Senegal.

Not a single goal was scored from the French side.

And now troubles continue for the French side in the 2006 World Cup too. Zidane has stunned all by coming out of his international retirement in August 2005 in an effort to rescue France’s faltering World Cup qualifying campaign.

And he played his part as the French side recovered to squeeze through ahead of Switzerland, Republic of Ireland and Israel.
