Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that ignorance towards Bengali icons like Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, who gave a new lease of life to the freedom struggle, is nothing but a “huge politics" that focuses on vote bank and appeasement politics by the government in West Bengal.
While addressing a public meeting at Chinsurah Dunlop ground in Hooghly district, Modi said, “I came to know that Vande Mataram Bhawan, where Bankim Chandra ji lived for five years, is in a dilapidated state. This is the same Bhawan where he wrote the poem ‘Vande Mataram’, which gave a new momentum to the freedom struggle."
“Unfortunately, the place where ‘amar gaan’ ‘Vande Mataram’ was penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee is not in a good shape. It is an injustice to Bengal’s pride. I see a huge politics behind it (ignorance towards Bengali icons), which focuses on vote bank politics and ‘tushtikaran’ (appeasement) and not patriotism," he added.
Countering TMC’s latest political slogans, ‘Bangla Nijer Meykei Chaye’ (Bengal wants its own daughter Mamata), the Prime Minister said, “In West Bengal, out of nearly 1.75 crore houses, only nine lakh houses are having water pipelines. There is an uncertainty about how many more years it will take to deliver water to the poor. It is unfortunate that ‘Bengal Ki Beti’ (daughters in Bengal) is suffering. This shows the injustice done to them by the TMC government. I would like to question you all, will you forgive this government?"
On ‘blocking Central schemes’, he said, “The central government transfers money directly into the bank accounts of farmers and poor people across the country. However, it is not reaching here in Bengal without the consent of all the ‘tolabaaz’ (extortionists) of TMC. This is the reason TMC leaders are becoming richer and common people are becoming poorer."
“Our priority is West Bengal’s development and it’s good to see that people here already made up their mind for ‘Real Poribortan’ (real change). This year ‘rail and metro railway’ connectivity is our priority. Such developmental work should have been done much before but now we should not delay it further," he added.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the extension of the Metro Railway from Noapara to Dakshineswar. The total cost of this project was Rs 464 crore and the extension will cover a distance of nearly 4.1 km.
The project was aimed to decongest the road traffic in the northern fringes of the city and also to connect famous Kali temples at Kalighat and Dakshineswar for the convenience of tourists and devotees.
The two newly-built metro railway stations, Baranagar and Dakshineswar, are loaded with state-of-the-art modern amenities for the commuters. It was designed with murals, photographs, sculptures and idols of Bengali icons.
He also inaugurated the third line between Kalaikunda and Jhargram covering a distance of 30 km of the 132 km long Kharagpur-Adityapur Third Line Project of South Eastern Railway. The project was approved with a total project cost of Rs 1,312 crore.
He also dedicated Rs 240 crore doubling of Azimganj to Khagraghat Road section, which is a part of the Howrah-Bandel-Azimganj section of the Eastern Railway.
