The summer season has finally arrived in India. With the onset of the season, people often find themselves reaching for watermelons and muskmelons throughout the day. Apart from acting as a refreshing agent in the scorching sun, these fruits also carry several health benefits, especially in weight loss.
According to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute ( MDPI), one cup of watermelon i.e. approximately 154 grams contains around 46 calories which makes it a low-calorie option. It is also rich in vitamins A and C. Regarding weight loss, Ayurvedic doctor VK Pandey from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, claims that losing weight in the summer is extremely easy. He recommends watermelon and muskmelon fruits for reducing weight.
Ayurvedic doctor VK Pandey advises at least three glasses of watermelon juice a day. You can also cut and eat watermelon and muskmelon a day to remain healthy. Vitamin E, zinc, magnesium and iron are found in abundance in watermelon. One of the reasons this fruit helps in weight loss is because of the composition of electrolytes and 99 per cent water in it. There are almost no calories in it. Only 100 calories are found in 500 grams as claimed by Ayurvedic doctor VK Pandey.
Muskmelon is also the most effective in weight loss. The calories are found to be only 50 in 200 grams. It also keeps you hydrated for a long time during the summer season as it contains 80 per cent water in it.
Minerals and nutrients including vitamins A, B and C are also found in melon which also strengthens our immunity system. It also balances the pH level in the body. By eating these two fruits, you can live comfortably for a week, adds Dr VK Pandey.
Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, said that you can also eat the watermelon and muskmelon together. The vibrant colours, juicy textures and complementary flavours can make a refreshing and nutritious fruit salad. She suggested eating these fruits during breakfast as our bodies are depleted after a night’s sleep and supplying them with nutrients first thing in the morning prepares them for the day’s challenges.
