Restless Legs Syndrome: How Vitamins Can Treat This Neurological Condition
Some early studies show that low levels of certain vitamins like B, C, D and E might be linked to RLS.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that impacts the brain and causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs. It disrupts the sleeping cycle, especially at night. Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Vitamin E deficiency are strongly associated with Restless Legs Syndrome.

This syndrome can’t be cured, but treatments can make it easier to deal with. Some early studies show that low levels of certain vitamins like B, C, D and E might be linked to RLS. Experts believe that taking vitamin supplements could help with some RLS symptoms.

Restless legs syndrome symptoms usually start in the late afternoon or evening and get worse at night. Some common symptoms of restless leg syndrome include:

  • Unpleasant sensations in the legs
  • Symptoms worsen during rest or sleep
  • Relief from symptoms when moving the legs
  • Change in sleeping patterns
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Decreased productivity level
  • Mood changes or depression
  • Daytime sleepiness

Vitamin B

The deficiency of Vitamin B is strongly linked with restless legs syndrome. Consuming foods rich in vitamins B12 and B6, such as eggs, fish and fibre-rich vegetables, can alleviate symptoms. However, taking vitamin B pills is more likely to have side effects.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency can disrupt dopamine function causing restless legs syndrome. Eating plenty of Vitamin D-rich foods strengthens bones and regulates nerve and muscle functions. But it’s important to remember that excessive Vitamin D intake isn’t good for your health either.

Vitamin C and E

People with chronic kidney disease have a higher risk of severe restless legs syndrome. Eating foods with plenty of vitamin C and vitamin E can help protect cells from damage. While these vitamins are good for you, they can cause serious side effects when taken with certain medications.

Other Treatments for Managing Restless Legs Syndrome

Currently, there’s no cure for restless legs syndrome. But besides vitamins, there are other ways to help you feel better. Your treatment will depend on how bad your symptoms are. It could involve taking vitamins and medications, or trying out home remedies as consulted by your doctor.
