Actress Anu Aggarwal rose to fame with her debut film Aashiqui, directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The romantic movie was both a commercial and critical hit, largely due to its music. Anu portrayed an innocent character opposite Rahul Roy and impressed everyone with her ability to deliver scenes in a single take, earning her the nickname ‘one-take artist’ from Bhatt. Her remarkable performance in Aashiqui won the hearts of many. She shocked audiences with a bold topless scene in the short film The Cloud Door. There were rumours about her relationship with Mahesh Bhatt. Right after Aashiqui, people began to link her name to Mahesh Bhatt who had already been married twice by then. Anu Aggarwal was only 22 years old at that point of time. Now after 34 years, she spoke about these rumours in an interview.
Anu revealed that she was living alone in Mumbai without her parents. Despite transitioning from modelling to acting, she excelled at delivering her scenes in a single take, earning the nickname ‘one-take artist’ from filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. This talent wasn’t well-received by everyone and may have sparked jealousy among her peers, who went on to spread rumours about her affair with Mahesh Bhatt. Anu opted to ignore the speculations and focused on her life.
In 1994, Anu appeared in The Cloud Door, an Indo-German short film directed by the renowned Indian director Mani Kaul. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was featured in several other film festivals. Anu filmed a topless scene only after the movie was selected for Cannes. She said in the same interview that originally the scene was not in the script and she had refused to do it. After completing the film, Anu returned to Mumbai but began questioning her decision to refuse the scene a month later. The director contacted her, informing her that the movie had been selected for Cannes but that the bold scene was still needed. Despite her reservations, Anu ultimately agreed to do the scene.
