In the 90s, the audience preferred to watch romantic love stories. To this date, many Indian films were released during this time that left quite a mark on the minds of the audience. Of those, love stories gave Tamil films a new dimension, as they had fresh plotlines and unique stories. One such film was Kadhal Kottai, released in 1996 and left an indelible mark on the minds of the audience. The film became a huge success. But do you know how much money it minted at the box office?
On July 12, 1996, Kadhal Kottai was released in the theatres. The film, directed by Agathiyan, stars Ajith Kumar and Devayani in the lead roles. Apart from them, Heera, Thalaivaasal Vijay and Karan are in supporting roles. The film was produced by Sivasakthi Pandian under the banner of Sivasakthi Movie Makers and was a huge hit. The film had a theatre run for over 250 days at the box office and became a silver jubilee. It also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Direction and Best Screenplay For Agathiyan. Such was its hype that it was remade in Kannada as Yaare Neenu Cheluve, in Hindi as Sirf Tum by the same director, and in Bengali as Hothat Brishti. Reportedly, the film set the cash registers ringing and earned more than Rs 12 crore.
The film centres around Kamali, living in Ooty and Suriya from Chennai. When Kamali loses her purse, having all her academic credentials, she feels heartbroken. On the other hand, Suriya, an orphan, finds the purse and sends it back to Kamali and soon, love blossoms as they begin to write each other love letters. The letters bridged their distance as they continued to stay in different cities. When the director, Agathiya narrated the story to the producers, none of them felt confident if it would work. Many even rejected the film saying that there was no logic as they asked how could two people fall in love without seeing each other.
Reportedly, somehow, the producers ‘okayed’ the story. To date, the Tamil audience believes that the climax of the film is one of the best. This year, the film completed 28 years since its release and continues to live rent-free in the minds of the Tamil audience, who showered Kadhal Kottai with much love.
