Akshaye Khanna was First Offered Sunil Dutt’s Role in Sanju but He Couldn’t Do It, Here’s Why
Akshaye Khanna says despite several meetings he could not pass the character's look test.

Currently busy in the promotions of his much-awaited forthcoming film The Accidental Prime Minister, in which he plays Sanjaya Baru, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s media adviser, Akshaye Khanna says he was also offered Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju.

Incidentally, Hirani offered Khanna to play the late actor-politician Sunil Dutt in the film, which went on to become one of the highest grossers of 2018. But despite several meetings, Khanna could not pass the look test. Actor Paresh Rawal then played Dutt in the film that had Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role.

Talking about it, Khanna told Deccan Chronicle, “Raj Kumar Hirani and I had a couple of meetings. In spite of innumerable ‘look tests’, I was a misfit in that character. So I missed out on working with him in the biopic.”

“I feel sad at not being able to work in Sanju after being bestowed upon with a chance to be the part of the film. He (Raju Hirani) is such an incredible and brilliant story teller,” Akshaye added.

But Khanna considers himself fortunate to have been able to share screen space with late actors Sridevi, Kader Khan and his father Vinod Khanna. “They were all great stars and working with them was a great experience. I consider myself blessed for having got a chance to work with all of them,” he said.

Directed by Vijay Gutte and starring Anupam Kher in the lead, The Accidental Prime Minister is slated to release on January 11.
