Anne Hathaway Says She's Been Sober For 5 Years, Reveals What Made Her Quit

Anne Hathaway is set to star in her upcoming film The Idea of You. The Amazon Original movie is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on May 2. Days ahead of the film’s release, the Hollywood star sat down for an interview with the New York Times. During the conversation, the actress highlighted one of her achievements – five years of sobriety.

Reflecting on her milestones, Hathaway said, “I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. 40 feels like a gift.” For Hathaway, being in the 40s is not as big of a deal as people tend to make it. The star went on to express her opinion on middle age and added, “The fact of the matter is, I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.”

Well, not the first time when the actress opened up about quitting alcohol. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2019, the Devil Wears Prada star revealed that she cut out alcohol. Sharing her decision to skip alcohol, Hathaway explained that she wanted to be completely available for her young son. “I’m gonna stop drinking while my son’s living in my house. I don’t totally love the way I [drink] and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings,” she elaborated.

Hathaway’s The Idea Of You is based on a popular novel by renowned American author Robinne Lee. The upcoming film explores the life of a 40-year-old single mother, Solène Marchand who develops a romantic connection with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of a boy band. The story takes an interesting turn when Hayes’ celebrity status causes turbulence in their relationship.

Directed by Michael Showalter, The Idea of You also stars Ella Rubin, Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld, Jordan Aaron Hall, Mathilda Gianopoulos, Raymond Cham Jr, Jaiden Anthony, Viktor White, and Dakota Adan as the lead actors.
