Anupam Kher will be seen playing the role of Jayaprakash Narayan in Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency. The film, as the title hints, unfolds the events that played out when Indira Gandhi declared Emergency in India. The period of Emergency in India lasted between 21-month period from 1975 to 1977. At the trailer launch of the film, Anupam revealed he was in New Delhi when the late Prime Minister of India had declared Emergency. He was pursuing his course in acting.
“Mandi House mein humara Drama School tha,” Anupam said, recalling his days at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. “Suddenly ek murdani si chah gayi thi, ek silence tha (a funeral-like environment suddenly took over, an eerie silence filled the city),” Anupam added.
“Jaya Prakash Narayan was the hope of the youth and nation at the time to fight against the emergency. He was my hero. When Kangana told me I am going to be playing that role, I was already wanting to do somebody who had done a role like that,” Anupam confessed. He feels that as time passes by, people tend to forget their heroes and the portrayal of Narayan on the big screen will remind people of the forgotten heroes.
Kangana Ranaut announced Emergency in 2021. The film was rumoured to be Indira Gandhi’s biopic. However, Kangana later clarified that even though it is a political drama, it is not Gandhi’s biopic. The actress is not just playing the lead in the film but is also directing it. Emergency has been postponed multiple times and is now scheduled to hit theatres on September 6, 2024.
Besides Kangana and Anupam, Emergency also stars Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry and Shreyas Talpade among others. While Shreyas Talpade will be seen playing the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Anupam Kher will be seen as Jayaprakash Narayan. Late actor Satish Kaushik will also be seen as Former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Jagjivan Ram.
