Janmashtami Special: 5 avatars of Krishna we all loved on screen
On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, IBNLive brings to you a list of on-screen appearances of Krishna.

Krishna has always been the most prominent mythological figure to appear on screen. His storyline and involvement in 'Mahabharat' has appeared on television more than any other deity and all have been a hit. The notorious charm that the character is associated with, leaves a huge amount of space for the makers to experiment with. He can be a cute and innocent 'Yashoda ka lal' in one frame, a notorious teenager with extra-ordinary powers in another. One can imagine him as a charmer and a philosopher; such is is the charm of Krishna. His teachings are considered to be the 'ideal way of life', his calculative mind is considered to be 'ideal for politics', everything about 'Shyam' is beautiful and the showbiz has captured his every essence in full form.

On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, IBNLive brings to you a list of on-screen appearances of Krishna, that captured his essence in all the conventional as well as unconventional ways possible:

Krishna in BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat'

BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat' is considered to the classic depiction of the Hindu scripture that was ever done on-screen. The Krishna of Chopra was ideally the Krishna sitting in every hindu temple. He was flawless, a deity full of magical powers, he was humble and ever smiling. He was above the worldly creations and supreme. He was God.

Krishna in Ramanand Sagar's 'Krishna'

One of the most popular shows of Doordarshan in the mid to late nineties, 'Krishna' was the life-story of Shri Krishna. The Krishna in this adaptation was mainly a super human. He went through all the phases of a human life but showed God-like characteristics at every stage. He was innocent yet mischievous. His smile was calm and his personality serene. 'Krishna's' Krishna was vivacious and young with an ever-lasting smile again.

Krishna in 'Jai Shri Krishna'

Colours aired the most loved form of Krishna in 'Jai Shri Krishna'. 'Bal roop' of Krishna is considered to be the most auspicious form of the lord. The story was of Krishna's childhood and the fables attached to it. The Bal Krishna was cute, innocent and vulnerable. He was too young for the worldly possession and had a clear soul. His laughter was carefree as the politics of the world was still to be known to him.

Krishna in 'Oh My God'

After television portrayal of 'Govinda Shauri' , Bollywood also had an interesting portrayal of Krishna in pop-culture. Akshay Kumar portrayed the 21st century Krishna in Umesh Shukla's 'Oh My God' and we got the glimpse of how the 'Dwarakadhish' would have been if born in 'Kalyug'. This Krishna was more of a friend than a problem solver. He just gave his advise and left the actions to Paresh Rawal's character. He was a preacher more than the doer. He was mischievous, funny and contemporary. Vey unconventional indeed!

Krishna in 'Raajneeti'

Remember Prakash Jha's modern Mahabharat? 'Raajneeti' had a big ensemble of stars and the story was inspired from the Hindu epic 'Mahabharata'. Nana Patekar, very aptly, played the mind behind the 'Dharma-yudh'. He was crude, more real, very human yet calculative. He

was a preacher, a doer, an instructor and totally biased. He was Krishna in real flesh and we loved the way he nailed it! If Krishna ever existed on this planet, he must've been very much like Brij Gopal- smart, calculative, intelligent and diplomatic yet biased!
