Khel Khel Mein features an important arc revolving Fardeen Khan’s sexuality. While viewers in India showered the character and his storyline with love, a major chunk of his character’s turn in the climx was cut in the UAE. The reason cited is ‘local restrictions.’ Director Mudassar Aziz reacted to the changes in the UAE version of the film. The filmmaker called the move ‘heartbreaking.’
“I’m a filmmaker. To write all sorts of characters and raise topics of conversation is my professional and moral duty! Khel Khel Mein does that. While it’s heartbreaking to see that something so relevant, and done with so much dignity, found its way out of the UAE release, I’m thrilled at the applause that [the rest] of the world is sending my way for those very scenes,” Mudassar told Mid-Day.
Fardeen added, “Through this role, I hoped to contribute to a conversation that is necessary and relevant. While edits may have been made, the intention behind the role – that of acceptance – remains unchanged, and I stand by the message’s importance.”
Khel Khel Mein is a remake of Perfect Strangers. It also marks Fardeen’s first film in 14 years. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Fardeen Khan, Aditya Seal and Pragya Jaiswal in the lead. News18 Showsha awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars. Our review praised Akshay Kumar’s return to comedy, five years after Housefull 4.
The review noted, “You can definitely give it a watch as it marks Akshay’s return to comedy… Look out for the scene where he has a conversation with his daughter who asks if she should break her virginity. He’s daddy cool, for sure! By the end of it, Khel Khel Mein becomes a film about acceptance and subtly makes a statement on how there’s no right and wrong when it comes to relationships. The film celebrates the grey and the messy perfection of marriages and friendships.”
