Actor Ajay Devgn is gearing up to portray the role of a football coach in Boney Kapoor’s upcoming movie Maidaan. The story centers around Syed Abdul Rahim’s relentless efforts to elevate Indian football on the global platform by assembling and training a team, including young players from impoverished areas. Following the release of the trailer, some viewers drew comparisons between the upcoming film and Chak De India! However, director Amit Ravindernath Sharma has reacted to these comparisons, saying that there are no similarities between the two movies.
During an interview with India Today, Sharma explained that people often compare sports films because they feature coaches and players. As soon as a sports film arrives, people compare these films because of the story of a coach and players. Even before watching the film, people assume that it’s a similar film. There are no similarities between these films, except maybe 22 players are running after one ball on the field. The story is different, the struggle is different. This is also not a sports biopic, it’s the journey of Abdul Rahim. Maidaan is about his emotional journey. Football is just the medium,” he said.
Ajay Devgn’s film Maidaan had been in the making for quite some time. The film is based on football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, under whose leadership, Indian football team won the Asian games in 1951 and 1962. The Indian football team had players like Chunni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Balaram, Franco and Arun Ghosh playing for the nation.
Amit Sharma also mentioned that making Maidaan was a challenge for him, as he had always wanted to do a biopic. He explained that challenges keep things fresh and that it’s important for people to learn about the man’s contributions to the country.
The film will release on April 10.
