Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series has been restrained from using ‘Aashiqui’ as a movie title, as per a judgement passed by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday. Mukesh Bhatt, who produced Aashiqui 2 with Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar, opened up about his legal battle with T-Series.
Mukesh Bhatt told the Times of India, “I made Aashiqui 2 with the same values that I made the first one with. I have the experience of understanding what to do and what not to do. I’ve been in the business for 50 years which unfortunately Bhushan is not. He was not understanding the core values of what ‘Aashiqui’ should be and unintentionally he was doing more things to harm it than to do good for it. The idea is to protect the franchise.”
He added, “I did what I did to protect the brand ‘Aashiqui’, not only for myself and Bhushan but people in general. ‘Aashiqui’ as a franchise belongs to the audience. If ‘Aashiqui’ dies, love dies, music dies. We are committed to protecting it for the audience for years to come. I did this because this was the only way there could be a stoppage for him to do further harm to the franchise because he was unintentionally doing damage to it.”
Justice Sanjeev Narula has ruled that T-Series using ‘Aashiqui’ can lead to confusion among the public and lead to dilution of the brand. The court ruled in favour of Vishesh Films after T-Series announced a film with a similar title. The original Aashiqui was produced by Gulshan Kumar. The 1990 film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and starred Rahul Roy, Anu Aggarwal and Deepak Tijori in pivotal roles. The film was a commercial success.
In 2013, Mohit Suri directed Aashiqui 2, a spiritual sequel to the 1990 film. Mahesh Bhatt presented the film which featured Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor as the leads. The film was a massive success and even marked the actors’ breakthrough performances. As Aashiqui 3 is in the works, there is buzz that Kartik Aaryan will headline the film.
