Oscars 2019: Rami Malek, Olivia Colman Win Top Acting Honours, 'Green Book' is Best Picture
Rami Malek and Olivia Colman won top acting honours at the 91st Academy Awards, while Peter Farrelly's 'Green Book' was declared Best Picture.

Rami Malek continued his awards show reign as he picked up the Best Actor Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, while Peter Farrelly’s Green Book, a biographical drama about Don Shirley’s musical tour through the American South with his driver-bodyguard Tony Vallelonga, was declared Best Picture. One of the night’s biggest surprises came in the Best Actress category when Olivia Colman was awarded for her performance in The Favourite amid tough competition from Glenn Close (The Wife) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).

Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron claimed the Best Director Oscar for his visual masterpiece Roma, which also bagged the golden statutes in Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film categories. On the other hand, after more than 30 years, Spike Lee finally witnessed his Oscar moment as he received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film BlacKkKlansman. “The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilise, let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right the thing! You Know I had to get that in there,” said Lee as he got political in his acceptance speech.

Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Green Book, while Best Supporting Actress Oscar went to Regina King for Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, in which she plays Sharon Rivers, a matriarch whose spirit is as strong as her love for her family. Pop star Lady Gaga won her first-ever Oscar in Best Original Song for Shallow along with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.

In addition, Black Panther picked up Marvel’s first Oscar for Costume Design. Announced by Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry, the award went to Ruth Carter, making her the first black woman to ever win in the Costume Design category. Black Panther also picked up Oscars for Best Production Design and Best Original Music Score.
