The 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards are happening tonight, February 24. As the ceremony unfolds, it’s recognising the best performances in film and television from the past year. Following a landmark year with a record SAG-AFTRA strike, the Screen Actors Guild is back together again. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer were praised for their amazing casts and the buzz they created, sparking a worldwide frenzy over the Barbenheimer trend. Barbie received nominations for its leading actress (Margot Robbie), supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), and stunt performers. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer earned nods for its lead actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), and supporting actress (Emily Blunt).
On the awards night, Oppenheimer dominated the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning the award for best cast, as well as for Cillian Murphy’s lead performance and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting role. The drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb was a box office hit last summer and is considered a front-runner for next month’s Academy Awards as well.
Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon, was named best actress for her performance as an Osage woman who is betrayed by her husband and targeted for her fortune as part of an elaborate conspiracy. From TV, the cast of HBO’s Succession was named best ensemble in a drama series for successfully pulling off their final season of power-grabbing and back-stabbing, while FX’s The Bear, earned a best comedy series ensemble award.
