Director James Gunn surprised DC fans by releasing the first look at David Corenswet as the new Superman. On Monday, Gunn took to his Instagram and shared a post featuring Corenswet wearing the Man of Steel suit. The photo took no time to go viral. Although fans are eager to see what Gunn has in store for them, fans missed Henry Cavill. But why was Henry Cavill replaced as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s DC universe? Well, let’s take a look at all that happened:
Henry Cavill Leaves Superman:
In 2022, when Black Adam was released, Henry Cavill confirmed he is returning as Superman with a cameo in the Dwayne Johnson film. He confirmed he is wearing the cape yet again with a post on Instagram. The actor had kissed his Witcher role goodbye to return as Superman.
However, weeks later, it was reported that the DC studio was no longer exploring the storyline of Superman with Henry Cavill in the lead. With rumours spreading like wildfire, Henry addressed the claims and confirmed that the reports are indeed true, he is no longer Superman.
In a statement on Instagram, he said that the studio had told him to announce his return as Superman but due to turn of events, he was shown the exit door. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” he said before adding, “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.”
Although Henry did not delve into the reason behind his exit, in December 2022, The Hollywood Reporter published a report claiming Cavill did not have a deal in place about his return as Superman. A source claimed it was a verbal agreement that the production house would develop more projects.
James Gunn On Henry Cavill’s Exit
Although Gunn has not commented on Henry Cavill’s exit, the filmmaker recently clarified that he was not involved and was unaware about Cavill’s recasting. Addressing a popular fan theory that Gunn always played to make a Superman film, even when he was working on The Suicide Squad, Gunn told fans on Threads, “Aside from the fact I had no interest in running DC until Peter decided to do it with me so he could do the exec stuff & I could focus on creative, when I was hired to write Superman it was always intended as & pitched as a new Superman story. So why would I lie about not planning that at the Squad premiere which would have amounted to the same thing at the end of the day? How does this particular conspiracy theory make sense?”
Who is David Corenswet, The New Superman?
In 2023, Gunn announced that David Corenswet will take forward the legacy of Superman. The actor is known for his TV projects such as ‘The Politician’ and ‘Hollywood.’ Last year, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet said his Superman would be different from Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel avatar. “I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic,” he said.
Well, fans will have to wait and see how different David Corenswet’s Superman would be. Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025.
