These days Rs 1,000 crore club films are common at the box office in India. In the last few years, India has produced several such blockbusters, made on high budgets. However, one historical action-adventure was able to mint Rs 1,000 crore almost 18 years ago, released in 2006.

The film is called Apocalypto, which was released on December 8, 2006. Set in the backdrop of the Mayan civilisation in the year 1517, the film follows a young man named Jaguar Paw and his tribe, as they are captured by invaders. After their village is destroyed by the invading army, they are forced to go on a dangerous journey to a Maya city where they are presented as human sacrifice.

Upon its release, the film was able to collect $120.7 million at the box office or Rs 1,005 crore and received mainly positive reviews from critics. It went on to earn three nominations at the 79th Academy Awards, for Best Makeup, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. It was also nominated for a BAFTA in the category of Best Film not in the English Language.

The director of the film is Mel Gibson, who co-wrote the story with Farhad Safinia. The cast of the film includes names like Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo, Mayra Sérbulo, Dalia Hernández, Jonathan Brewer and Gerardo Taracena among many others. It is produced by Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey under the banner of Touchstone Pictures and Icon Productions. The film’s score is handled by James Horner and the cinematographer is Dean Semler while the editing is done by John Wright. Apocalypto was made under a budget of 40 million dollars or Rs 333 crore. It is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

In India, the first film to surpass the mark of Rs 1000 crore is the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal, which was released on December 23, 2016. It was followed by Prabhas-led Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, released in 2017. So far, films like RRR, KGF: Chapter 2, Pathan and Jawaan have grossed more than Rs 1000 crore at the box office.
