South star Rajinikanth is currently filming TJ Gnanavel’s Vettaiyan, slated for a release later this year. Following this project, Rajinikanth will collaborate with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for his 171st film, titled Coolie. Anirudh is on board to compose the music for this Sun Pictures production. Reportedly, Coolie revolves around the backdrop of gold smuggling, with Rajinikanth essaying the role of a mafia don. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj is reportedly in discussions with renowned Hindi actor Ranveer Singh to share the screen with Rajinikanth in the film. Additionally, there are talks of Shobana, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj and others joining the cast. Reports also suggest that Shruti Haasan will portray the role of Rajinikanth’s daughter in the film.
The film that was initially called Thalaivar 171 revealed its title yesterday with a 3-minute teaser showing Rajinikanth busting a gold smuggling consignment in progress by beating down the goons. The inclusion of the aforementioned actors in the movie is not yet confirmed as the teaser depicts no one else except Rajinikanth himself. And now, the latest buzz is that Telugu star Nagarjuna has also joined the cast of Coolie. If it happens to be true, this will be the first collaboration between two stalwarts of Indian cinema, Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna.
Nagarjuna’s 2022 film The Ghost failed at the box office but he redeemed himself with the largely successful film Naa Saami Ranga released earlier this year. Rajinikanth also had his share of both failure and success last year with Jailer being a blockbuster but his Laal Salaam getting a cold reception at the box office. There have been speculations about Coolie being part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe or not. The inclusion of gold watches in the newly released trailer yesterday has also led to fans drawing connections to Suriya’s Rolex character in Vikram. However, just like the rest of the cast of the movie, everything else has also been kept in wraps for the moment.
