Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail Claims No. 1 Spot In IMDb’s Top 250 Indian Movies Of All Time List
12th Fail, Maharaja and Laapataa Ladies have secured top positions in the IMDb’s recently released list of top 250 Indian films.

IMDb has recently unveiled its highly anticipated list of the top 250 Indian films of all time and it’s full of surprises. Claiming the top spot is last year’s critically acclaimed drama film 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and starring Vikrant Massey. Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja landed at number 8 while Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, India’s official Oscar submission, ranked at number 23. Regional films such as Kantara are also among the top contenders on the list.

The highly coveted list includes all films made to date in India and features classics from all decades, genres and regions. Reportedly, the 250 movies on the list have received more than 8.5 million votes on IMDb.

Aamir Khan’s three films—3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par and Dangal— secured three positions in the top 20. Five of the movies on the list were released in 2024, including Maharaja, Maidaan, The Goat Life, Laapataa Ladies and Manjummel Boys.

On the directors’ front, Mani Ratnam reigned the list with seven of his films making it to the list, while Anurag Kashyap closely followed with six titles. The list included six movies along with their sequels: Drishyam (Malayalam) and Drishyam 2 (Malayalam), Drishyam (Hindi) and Drishyam 2 (Hindi), Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Jigarthanda and Jigarthanda DoubleX, K.G.F: Chapter 1 and K.G.F: Chapter 2 and Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Tumbbad, which recently had a theatrical re-release, earned a place at number 69. Meanwhile, Yash Chopra’s timeless romance Veer-Zaara, which also saw a re-release, joins the elite 250 list.

12th Fail, released on October 23, 2023, was based on Anurag Pathak’s novel and brought to life the inspiring journey of Manoj Kumar Sharma, a man who rose from extreme poverty to become an Indian Police Service officer. Starring Vikrant Massey as Sharma and Medha Shankar as his wife Shraddha Joshi, an IRS officer, the film portrayed his grit as he achieved his goal against all odds. Alongside Massey and Shankar, the cast included Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar and Priyanshu Chatterjee. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, 12th Fail emerged victorious, receiving five awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor (Critics) for Massey.

In an earlier interview with ANI, Massey reflected on how emotionally challenging the role was for him. “Even with Manoj Kumar Sharma, there were moments when Vinod sir would call a cut and I would continue weeping even after the cut was called because I just could not control myself,” he said.
