Despite releasing in about 4300 screens and getting decent reviews from critics, Shah Rukh Khan's latest film Zero only managed to earn Rs 20.14 crore on its first day. A big-budget romantic drama from an acclaimed director Aanad L Rai, who has previously helmed hits like Tanu Weds Manu, Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, with a powerhouse cast, SRK's Zero had generated a huge amount of buzz among the audiences. But looking at its opening numbers, it seems the film didn't quite live up to the expectations.
Tweeting the box office figures, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote: "#Zero has underperformed on Day 1, despite extensive release [4380 screens] + #Christmas vacations... Sat and Sun biz extremely crucial... Fri ₹ 20.14 cr. India biz." (sic)

On the other hand, Aamir Khan's Thugs Of Hindostan opened with a big bang during Diwali and collected over Rs 52 crore on the first day itself. However, the momentum nose-dived over the weekend. Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju collected Rs 34. 75 crore on day 1. It is followed by Salman Khan's Race 3 which earned Rs 29.17 crore.
Zero revolves around Bauua Singh, a vertically challenged man who falls in love with two women, Aafia (Anushka Sharma), a scientist who suffers from cerebral palsy, and Babita Kumari (Katrina Kaif), a Bollywood superstar.
CNN-News18 film critic Rajeev Masand rated the film 2/5. In his review, he wrote, "Where’s the small-town, real world charm that has been the strong suit of this writer-director pair since 'Tanu Weds Manu'? How did we land up at a space research facility in America? Why is this film competing with 'Om Shanti Om' to set a record for maximum cameos? These and a dozen other questions were swimming in my head as the film hobbled towards its climax, clocking in at nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes. The problem isn’t just that the film is too long. It’s that there are so many scenes that are completely incoherent."
