At least eight people lost their lives, while over 40 were injured after a fire broke out at Mumbai’s seven-storey Jay Bhavani building near Azad Maidan in Goregaon West.
According to reports, the blaze started at around 3am in the parking lot of the building and several cars and two-wheelers were also gutted.
The injured were immediately taken to private hospitals in Goregaon, including HBT Trauma Centre and Cooper Hospital.
Out of eight deceased, six casualties were reported at the HBT Trauma Centre, one person died at the Cooper Hospital while another victim, whose identity could not be verified at the time, died in the tragedy
The rescue operation began as soon as officials reached the spot and the fire was brought fully under control. At least eight fire engines, five jumbo water tankers, one turn-table ladder, and an ambulance were used to extinguish the massive fire.
It took nearly four hours for the fire brigade to extinguish the fire. More than eight fire engines and other fire-fighting equipment were used in the operation, a civic official said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is in New Delhi, said he was constantly monitoring the situation in Mumbai and announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of all the victims. He also said that the treatment would be free for all the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained by the deaths in the Goregaon fire tragedy and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also expressed condolences on the deaths in the Goregaon fire incident and said that the administration is coordinating with BMC in the matter.
“Pained to know about the loss of lives in the fire incident at Goregaon, Mumbai. We are in touch with BMC & Mumbai Police officials & all the assistance is being provided. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing speedy recovery to the injured ones,” Fadnavis wrote on X.
Meanwhile, the state government has announced that a special committee will be constituted to probe the exact cause of the fire which will submit its report within 15 days.
