Star Indian batter Musheer Khan, who is the younger brother of Indian Test cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, is all set to miss the upcoming Irani Cup 2024 match between Mumbai and the Rest of India side in Lucknow from October 1 to 5 after suffering a fracture in a road accident.
According to a report in the Times of India on Saturday, the 19-year-old right-handed batter, who scored a century for Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai in the final of the 2023-24 edition of the Ranji Trophy against Vidarbha, got injured while travelling with his father-cum-coach Naushad Khan from Kanpur to Lucknow for the Irani Cup tie.
His absence is a big setback for Mumbai, as now, apart from the Irani Cup, he will miss the first few matches of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 as well.
“He didn’t travel with the Mumbai team to Lucknow for the Irani Cup. He was probably travelling from Azamgarh with his father to Lucknow when the accident happened,” a source told TOI.
Musheer, who scored a double century for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 quarterfinal match against Baroda and a century (181) in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy 2024 match for Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India B against India A at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, was all set to get picked in the India A team for the three four-day matches against Australia, but now his selection is very much doubtful. He will only be picked up if he gets fit in time, and it remains to be seen how long his recovery would last.
While the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) hasn’t made any official comment about the accident, it is expected that the Mumbai selectors will pick a replacement for Musheer.
After Musheer’s injury, it will be interesting to see who will open for Mumbai with Prithvi Shaw in the Irani Cup match now.
Apart from his heroics in domestic cricket, like his elder brother, Musheer made headlines for his super show with the bat in the ICC U-19 World Cup as well. He scored two centuries for India in the tournament where Boys in Blue finished as runners up.
