ON THIS DAY IN 1994: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is an icon for millions of Indian cricket fans. He not only played the game of cricket but also changed the way the game is played. In his career spanning over two decades, Tendulkar broke countless batting records and became the first batsman to score 100 centuries in international cricket.
Tendulkar’s first ODI century came on September 9, 1994, against Australia in Colombo. He had been playing ODI cricket for five years at that point, but had never been able to convert a good start into a century. On that day, however, everything clicked for him. He scored 110 off 130 balls, helping India to a win by 31 runs.

Tendulkar opened the batting with Manoj Prabhakar, and the two put on 87 runs for the first wicket. Prabhakar was dismissed for 20, but Tendulkar continued to bat fluently. He faced some tough bowling from the Australian attack, but he never looked out of control. He hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his innings.
Tendulkar’s century was a watershed moment in his career. It gave him the confidence to know that he could score centuries at the highest level. He went on to score 49 more ODI centuries, becoming the highest scorer in ODI history.
