Although they appeared to have a strong bromance in the cult classic Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Aamir Khan and Salman Khan had a strained relationship when the movie was being made. Their co-star Shehzad Khan recently opened up about the same and shared why they often fought on the film sets while he became a peacemaker between them.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, when asked about Aamir and Salman’s strained relationship during the Andaz Apna Apna shoot, he shared, “I have seen it happen in front of my eyes. Many times, things would happen. Salman is Salman, and Aamir is Aamir. I won’t blame anyone for it. Often, I used to be the bridge between them. I have been very close to Salman since childhood; toh cheezein nipat jaati thi (so things used to be sorted out).”
Both Aamir and Salman had a different way of working. While Aamir is extremely punctual about his set time, Salman would come late on the sets he had to wait for a long time.
“Aamir would reach the Mud Island bungalow at 7–7.30 in the morning when call time used to be 9 a.m. Salman bechaare 10-11 baje tak aa hi jaate the (poor Salman would come by 10-11),” Khan shared. Speaking in favour of Salman, he added, “We all know how difficult it is to come from Bandra. Kabhi gaadi kharab, kabhi kuch kharab. (Sometimes the car broke down or sometimes something else.”
Back in 2013, Aamir in fact said on Koffee with Karan, “In Andaz Apna Apna, I had a very bad experience working with Salman. I didn’t like him then. I found him rude and inconsiderate. After tasting the experience of working with him, I just wanted to stay away from him.”
Shehzad then added that, despite their rift, they were extremely good with their parts. “But the performance of both of them was up to the mark; nobody can say this is 32 takes and this is one take.” He added, “We used to have a lot of fun during the shoot. It was a very family-like atmosphere. Our producer would bring home-cooked food. He used to pamper us like hell,” shared Khan.
Back in 1994, Andaz Apna Apna took the audience by storm. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Vinay Kumar Sinha, the movie featured an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karishma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal (in a dual role), and Shakti Kapoor.
