Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is currently in Mumbai and this evening, she unveiled the list of nominations for the segment ‘Word To Screen’ at an event for Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival event. While speaking about the evolution of costume designing with a focus on Bhanu Athaiya, who won Bollywood its first Oscar in 1983 (for the film Gandhi), Sonam revealed that she now intends on fulfilling her dream of acting in a period film soon.
“Even though I am known for my clothes, for some reason every director in reel life wants me in simple clothes with no make-up. That’s why I am always the girl-next-door onscreen. I have never done a period film with jewellery and Indian clothes. I have never done a dramatic film like that,” she said.
Sonam further pointed out that even the audience prefers to see her as a small-town girl in films and that’s why she channels her inner diva and love for fashion on the red carpet. “I am always wearing simple salwar kameez and I always belong to a Chandi Chowk or a small village in Punjab in my films and people like me dressed up in a simple way. My dream is to do a period role one day. That’s why I fulfill my dream of wearing dramatic costumes at the red carpet,” the actress said with a laugh.
Not the one to be mincing her words, Sonam went on to share her thoughts on what went wrong with her last two films, The Zoya Factor and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. “Now there’s a new trend that there will be one costume designer to design for the leads and there will be another designer who will work for the background artists. In these cases, there’s never a synergy between the two. In my last two films, we had that problem,” she opined.
The actress who was last seen in Blind stressed on how films should go back to the trend of having just one costume designer, and stated, “I don’t agree with it. It’s like having three DoPs and two directors on a film. These are HODs we’re talking about. An HOD should be an HOD. There shouldn’t be five HODs on a film set. Now that might be a controversial statement (laughs).”
