Coetzee sent down 21 overs across the two innings of the series opener and took one wicket for 102 runs.

The 23-year-old has played three Tests so far and taken 10 wickets at 24.50.

He left a solid impression during South Africa’s ODI World Cup campaign in India where they made it to the semi-finals following an eye-catching performance in the league stage.

The youngster played a vital role in South Africa’s march into the knockouts as he took 20 wickets in just eight matches at an average of 19.80.

Thanks to his breakthrough show in the ODI showpiece, Coetzee landed a hefty IPL deal with five-time champions Mumbai Indians as he was signed by the franchise for Rs 5 crore.

Coetzee is expected to line-up alongside Jasprit Bumrah for MI next season as the franchise hopes to end its title drought having last won the trophy in 2020.

“I cannot wait to join the Mumbai Indians team for the next IPL season. Running out at the Wankhede in thr blue and gold, and bowling with Bumrah, I cannot wait. It’s going to be fantastic. I’m so excited to see all of you there,” said Coetzee.

Meanwhile South Africa have succeeded in ensuring that India will continue to wait for their first ever Test series win in the country after a big innings victory in Centurion.

Kagiso Rabada played the starring role with the ball, recording a five-wicket haul in the first innings followed by two wickets in the second as the hosts won by an innings and 32 runs to take 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
