In a major twist, an Army personnel, who alleged that six people attacked him and wrote ‘PFI’ on his back near his home at Kadakkal in the southern Kerala district of Kollam on Sunday, has been arrested after the police investigation found the complaint to be fake. According to police, the Army personnel, Shine Kumar, got his friend, Joshy, to write the letters standing for the banned outfit ‘Popular Front of India’ on his back to get national attention, so he can get a posting of his choice.
R Prathapan Nair, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kollam Rural, said, “The investigation has shown that the case was fake and both Kumar and Joshy have been arrested. They have been arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for trying to create communal violence, giving fake statement, proof and for conspiracy. He was preparing for this for the past five months.”
KUMAR’S COMPLAINT, JOSHY’S VERSION
According to Kumar’s complaint: “On Sunday, around 11 pm, while he was returning home from Onam celebration, he saw two people standing on the road. The duo took him to a rubber forest and the others joined him. Six of them attacked him and wrote PFI on his back. His hands and mouth were taped, but he used his phone to call his friend.”
However, according to Joshy, they were drunk at the time of the incident. “Kumar asked me to write PFI, but I heard DFI and wrote it. Kumar then asked me to write PFI,” Joshy told the police.
Joshy also told the police that Kumar asked him if he could hit him. Joshy said he couldn’t as he was drunk and not in a position to do so. “Kumar then lied down and asked me to pull him. He put the tape on his mouth by himself and asked me to tape his hands and leave,” Joshy told police.
The police was suspicious of the complaint from the beginning as there were several inconsistencies and loopholes.
The two accused will be produced in court. Police said that the investigation is still going on and they are checking if more people were involved.
