Rohit Sharma on Tuesday reached the milestone of 10,000 runs in ODI cricket during India’s Super Four clash against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. With a six, the India ODI captain got to the magical landmark and also became the second quickest (in terms of innings) to do so.

Counted among the modern-day batting greats, Rohit joined the likes of fellow countryman Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni in the list.

Overall, he’s the 15th batter in ODI history to do so.

The record for the quickest to 10,000 ODI runs is currently held by Rohit’s India teammate Virat Kohli who needed just 205 to get there.

Tendulkar, who has scored the most runs in ODI history, was the first ever batter to get to the milestone, taking 259 innings.

Rohit holds the record for the most double-hundreds in ODIs having recorded three so far in his storied career. His 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 is the highest individual score in the format at international level.

Currently, he’s leading India in the ongoing Asia Cup being co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

India started the Super Four round with a comprehensive win over Pakistan, beating their old rivals by a massive 228 runs on Monday. Rohit and Shubman Gill scored half-centuries before Kohli and KL Rahul hit scintillating hundreds to propel India to a mammoth 356/2.

India then skittled Pakistan for 128 to climb up to the top of the Super Four points table.

India have been forced to play three days in a row with rain interrupting their Super Four clash with Pakistan on Sunday which was pushed to the reserve day.

Rohit said the team is taking it as a challenge and claimed the players are fresh as they were anyway well rested ahead of the second round.

“That’s the challenge you come across as a sportsman, different challenges thrown at you as a player and as a team. We ensured everyone got into the pool after the game last night. They are fresh as we had five days off before these two games. Last game was good for us, we batted well and then came out to defend the total with some good bowling. But again this is a new day and a fresh game,” Rohit said at the toss.
