Rohit Sharma Nears Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar in Elusive List; First Indian Captain to Score 500 Runs in World Cup
Rohit Sharma surpassed numerous milestones against Netherlands, becoming the first Indian captain to score more than 500 runs in World Cup history, and other such records.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma broke multiple records on Sunday, November 12 as he helped the Men in Blue get off to an explosive start against the Netherlands in Bengaluru. The final group stage clash for both teams was played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with Rohit winning the toss and opting to bat first. Shubman Gill and the Hitman both gave India a flying start as the opening pair stitched together a century stand with Gill smashing a quickfire fifty.

While the youngster started bright, the Indian captain was mixing aggression with caution as well, however after Shubman was dismissed on 51, Rohit put his foot on the pedal and started to play his signature shots.

Rohit Sharma achieved plenty of milestones against the Dutch team, including closing in on Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli’s record for most fifty-plus scores in World Cup history.

Legendary Indian opener Sachin leads the list for most fifty-plus scores in World Cup history having achieved the milestone on 21 occasions while Kohli in his 35 innings has 14 fifty-plus scores. Rohit meanwhile is now just one shy of Virat, with an incredible 13 fifty-plus scores from just 26 innings. Apart from the Indian trio, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan (13), and Kumar Sangakkara (12) are also on the list.

Also, Rohit became the first player in the 48-year World Cup history to score more than 500 runs in the tournament twice, having achieved the feat in 2019 as well.

The Hitman surpassed AB de Villiers’ 8-year-old record to become the batsman with more sixes in a calendar year in ODI cricket, showing his aggressive style of batting, and he also holds the honour of smashing the most sixes and most fours in a single World Cup edition as captain.

Rohit Sharma also became the highest-scoring Indian captain in World Cup history, and he is the only Indian skipper to score more than 500 runs in the tournament.
