AAP win shows voters rejected politics of hatred: Jamaat

New Delhi: Muslim organisation Jamaat-e- Islami Hind (JIH) on Thursday said that the massive victory of AAP in the Delhi Assembly elections was a strong and democratic reply to the politics of hatred even as it opined that one of the main reasons for the BJP's defeat was arrogance among its leadership.

"We commend the young political outfit for fighting the elections on issues of common people. The uniqueness of AAP was that it addressed common people without flashing the card of caste, class or creed. People have rejected the politics based on hatred and division of society," JIH national president Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Omari told reporters here.

A statement issued by JIH said that the main reasons behind BJP's defeat were the arrogance that had crept into its leadership after its victory in Lok Sabha polls and the neglect of the development promises that the party and Narendra Modi had made during the election campaign.

AAP swept the Delhi polls with a tally of 67 seats in the 70-member Assembly with BJP picking up the remaining three seats.

"BJP had won the general elections last year on promises of development and welfare of all. But the big victory, it seems, made the party and its leaders arrogant. They put the poll promises and real issues on the back-burner and launched campaigns in the name of 'Love Jihad' and 'Ghar Wapsi'," JIH said in a statement following a press meet earlier in the day. The Delhi poll outcome has given BJP "an opportunity to rethink their policies and attitudes", JIH said, adding that it hoped "they would do it honestly".

JIH also, meanwhile, expressed hope that the AAP government will address the issues of the common people, including the minorities. It also sought AAP's special attention towards the neglected Muslim pockets of Delhi.

"AAP should ensure justice for all sections of society, ensure peace and harmony and take effective steps for the protection of the weaker sections, including minorities and women.

"Specific issues of Muslims such as safety, security, law and order, victimisation in the name of terrorism should be addressed seriously. The Muslim pockets of Delhi are relatively more neglected (and) the new government should give special attention to them," Omari said.

In response to a question, the JIH leader said he was a bit concerned over what he said was the low Muslim presence within AAP ranks.

"AAP has not talked about any specific issue of Muslims and problems of Muslim-dominated areas. There is not much Muslim representation in the front row of AAP," he said.

The press conference was attended by top leaders of JIH, including its secretary general Nusrat Ali and secretaries Mohammad Salim Engineer and Mohammad Ahmed.
