Leader of Opposition says Congress chief provoked Modi.

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Friday defended Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and demanded that the Election Commission must sent a notice to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for “objectionable” statements.

Advani said Modi supporting the murder of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter was a response to Sonia’s comments.

Sonia calling Modi a "merchant of death" and "dishonest" was "highly objectionable" and such remarks are also not good for democracy, said Advani. "I would like to know whether Gandhi has been issued any notice so far. "Election Commission should not have double standards and should adopt a uniform approach in both the cases."

Defending Modi, he said: "on the basis of whatever I have read in newspapers, I can say that his statement would not have come, had the Congress President had not made those remarks."

"Sonia demonising a democratically-elected Chief Minister as merchant of death is a provocation of the gravest kind, Advani said, adding it was a "personalised attack and betrays a perverse mind".

Advani downplayed senior BJP leader Keshubhai Patel dubbing Modi as "Hitler". He said such adjectives are generally used in India to those who one feel are autocrats and it has nothing to do with blood and violence.
