New Delhi: Recent comments by BJP leaders, including those by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, party spokesperson Sambit Patra and Union Minister Giriraj Singh, have drawn flak from opposition parties.
Leaders from the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have all lashed out at the ruling party for the “unparliamentary" and “uncalled for" comments, especially Patra’s comments comparing the opposition grand alliance to terrorist and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
Patra on Saturday had tweeted a video of Hafiz Saaed delivering a hate speech against Prime Minister Modi and wrote, “It’s not just the yet formed “Mahagathbandhan" that desperately wants to stop India from having Modi as its PM in 2019. There are others as well…desperately trying for d same! Hafiz Saeed openly saying that he will shed blood of Narendra Modi (sic)."
However, Patra later issued a clarification saying, “Of course this is not a comparison! Modi Ji’s attack on Black Money and corruption is getting the opposition in India on one page while his attack on terrorism & Surgical Strike is pushing Hafeez Sayed to desperation! This proves that the Modi government is moving the right way!"
On Sunday night, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, too, stirred controversy when he tweeted, “Good morning, Maoists, casteists, feudalists and Osama (Bin Laden) supporters are all standing against the nationalist coalition (NDA). But as the river of development flows, NDA’s boat is speeding ahead to victory in 2019."
Describing the comments as “shocking", former Delhi Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dixit said, “There is a line of civility in politics which one must not cross. We must remember that while we are all political adversaries, we are not enemies in real life. We cannot be. One must never indulge in personal attacks. This may very well be a sign of desperation since they feel the public mandate slipping away from their hands."
Earlier this year, during the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls, when the BSP and SP had come together to take on the BJP, CM Yogi Adityanath had said the two parties coming together was like the “friendship of a snake and mongoose". Former BSP MP Munquad Ali agreed with Dixit’s assessment and said, “If someone is secure and confident, they never use such language. This is clearly happening because they feel they can’t measure up to us. They are feeling insecure because they know they have failed the people on all counts. Instead of calling us names, maybe their leaders should explain why not a single Indian citizen has received the Rs 15 lakh that was promised."
Samajwadi Party leader and former UP Planning Commission Member Sudhir Panwar said, “There are two things to be seen in these comments. First is the BJP’s disdain for democratic politics. The same people who voted them to power voted for the opposition in Gorakhpur, Phulpur and Kairana. The second is their caste and communal bias. All their statements are either aimed at OBC and Dalit leaders like Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati or they have a definite communal colour to them."
