Gandhinagar: Anandiben Patel is the new Chief Minister of Gujarat and the first woman to hold the post in the state. Anandiben, a close associate of her predecessor, the PM-elect, Narendra Modi, had his firm backing even though there were reservations in some quarters over her candidature.
Anandiben was considered to be the frontrunner for the post as till a few months back, when Modi was busy campaigning for the general elections, she was at the forefront of the state administration.
She was heading the group of ministers and enjoyed the complete confidence of Modi.
Her appointment came minutes after Modi resigned as the Gujarat CM.
"I am thankful the state legislature and the people of Gujarat for having faith in me and appointing me as the state Chief Minister," she said, adding, "The BJP has always respected women and their rights. I will continue to work for the development and progress that has been initiated by Modiji."
