New Delhi: Parliament was in uproar on Friday over the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya 14 years ago.
Lok Sabha was adjourned Wednesday for an hour after MPs from different parties created uproar over the demolition. Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 1400 hours IST.
As Lok Sabha met, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee paid tributes to former members who had passed away.
Soon after, MPs belonging to the Opposition were on their feet raising slogans like “Ram naam se sharmate hain, Afzal ko gale lagaate hain”, suggesting that the government, which considers itself secure, was trying to save Parliament attack convict Mohammed Afzal from execution.
UPA members demanded the arrest of those responsible for the demolition of the Babri mosque. At the same time, members of the BJP shouted that the Ram temple would be constructed at the disputed site itself.
Before the Lok Sabha met, MPs from Left parties, Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had staged a sit-in outside parliament protesting the mosque demolition.
The MPs asked the government to take immediate steps to arrest BJP leaders, who were charged for the demolition of the shrine, including Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani.
The MPs said BJP leaders like Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi should resign from parliament. They also raised slogans saying that Advani be hanged for the "crime".
Led by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MPs Sitaram Yechury, Brinda Karat, SP leaders Jaya Bachchan, Amar Singh and Mohan Singh, the members held placards and shouted slogans like "Down, Down Communalism" and "Punish the culprits of Babri demolition".
