'BJP adamant on adjournment motion over FDI'
'BJP adamant on adjournment motion over FDI'
BJP completely opposes the FDI policy in multi-brand retail, Sumitra Mahajan said.

Indore: BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan on Saturday said the Congress-led UPA government should not shy away from facing the adjournment motion on the issue of FDI in retail, if it claims to have sufficient numbers.

"BJP completely opposes the FDI policy in multi-brand retail and would not allow the UPA government to run the House until its adjournment motion is allowed for debate, and if required for a vote," she told a press conference.

"BJP has been adamant in Lok Sabha since beginning of the winter session to move the adjournment motion on FDI in retail but the sitting could not take place smoothly as entire opposition and some of the allies of UPA protested over the cabinet decision," Mahajan said.

Defending the NDA government's 2004 Vision Document in which FDI in retail was proposed, the MP said, "the BJP was considering the matter then. However, it was never announced or imposed directly BJP favoured single brand FDI not the

entire retail sector."

"Three days after holding the all party meet on the very issue, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has not apprised the Prime Minister on the Opposition's concern on the matter, which is surprising," Mahajan, who represents Indore LS constituency, said.

"Neither the Lokpal Bill nor the issues like price rise, inflation or black money were raised in the first few days of Winter Session. It was utter confusion and against the public interest," she said.

Mahajan further said the BJP MPs would submit a statement to the Speaker proclaiming that none of them holds any account with the foreign banks.

In the backdrop of today's protests by the Bhopal Gas tragedy survivors for various demands, she appealed the Centre to initiate concrete steps in this regard.
