The Election Commissioner will be part of three-member commission to hear complaint against the party.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Thursday rejected the BJP’s demand that Election Commissioner Navin Chawla be barred from hearing an appeal to de-recognise the party.

Chawla would be part of a three-member commission to hear the appeal filed by the BJP’s rival parties. The commission has begun hearing the parties appeal that the BJP must be de-recognised for a CD which denigrates Muslims and was released during a party function in Lucknow in March.

The BJP had demanded that Chawla should not be part of the proceedings, as it had filed petition against him in the Supreme Court and had taken the signature of 200 MPs against him.

The BJP argued that when the Supreme Court was hearing its petition Chawla should not hear a complaint against the party.

The Commission, during the hearing, is expected to ask the Uttar Pradesh administration what action it has taken on the FIR filed against BJP leaders and others in connection with the circulation of the controversial CD.

The EC action came in the wake of Congress demand that the EC pass an administrative order to stop distribution of the controversial CD.

Besides BJP President Rajnath Singh and senior party leader Lalji Tandon, the Commission had directed that FIRs be filed against all those responsible for producing the CD, including those who acted in it and wrote its script and those

involved in its release, distribution and display.
