New Delhi: The BJP is all set to kick off its campaign for the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday with simultaneous rallies at several key locations like Kanpur, Agra, Jhansi and Varanasi.

While former prime minister and senior party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee was scheduled to launch the campaign on Sunday, his poll programme has been deferred owing to his illness.

The party, however, continues to maintain that Vajpayee would be campaigning for party candidates in the UP polls at a later stage. It is likely that Vajpayee will be campaigning just before each phase of the seven-phase elections.

According to the detailed campaign schedule chalked out by the party, BJP President Rajnath Singh and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav will address a rally in Jhansi on Sunday along with the party’s state unit chief Kesarinath Tripathi.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L K Advani, and senior state party leader Lalji Tandon will address a rally in Agra while party’s chief ministerial candidate Kalyan Singh, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and Apna Dal President Sonelal Patel would address a meeting in Kanpur.

Former BJP president MM Joshi will launch the party’s campaign from Meerut while Venkaiah Naidu will join a party rally in Varanasi. BJP is fighting the UP elections in alliance with Apna Dal and JD-U under a seat-sharing arrangement.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Lalji Tandon on Saturday set to rest speculations regarding the candidature of BJP chief Rajnath Singh's son Pankaj Singh from Chiraigaon seat in Chandauli, saying he would not contest the polls.
