New Delhi: Is the BJP-BJD alliance in Orissa heading for a split in the coming Lok Sabha elections? So far this has been one of the longest and most successful political alliances in the state.

But after BJD's succcess in recent local bodies elections - fought separately by BJD and BJP - the party wants to contest the forthcoming elections separately unless at least 100 of the total 147 Assembly seats are not given to it to contest.

The state BJP, however, refuses to meet this demand.

Talks between the partners to sort out the issue have failed. BJP argues that the results of elections to local bodies is not a yardstick to measure the strength of a national party like BJP in the Assembly and Parliamentary polls.

While it is for BJP leader L K Advani and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to decide on the issue, if the alliance fails, the Congress will be the gainer.

Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar-led NCP is in talks with BJD, an ally of the BJP, in Orissa.
