Congress protests after BJP's Swamy calls Priyanka an alcoholic
'Subramanian Swamy must take back his comments on Priyankaji. We will complain to the EC as well,' Congress leader Haroon Yusuf said.

New Delhi: Dozens of Congress party workers on Tuesday protested outside the residence of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for a caustic remark he made about Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra. Swamy reportedly said that Priyanka would have been thrashed if she contested from Varanasi since she drank too much.

He said she and her husband had a bad name. Then, in a tweet, while taking on the Varun Gandhi issue, Swamy said, "Good luck to Varun. One Nehru whose blood is 100 percent Hindustaniyat. No wonder Booze and Buddhu jealous (sic)."

Swamy was referring to the war of words between Varun Gandhi and his cousin Priyanka. Priyanka, in a meeting with Congress party workers in Sultanpur on Monday, had asked that Varun be voted out since he was a Gandhi who had been "led astray".

Varun, who filed his nomination papers from Sultanpur on Monday, hit back saying it was high time Indian politicians raised the level of debate. "It is my request to all that instead of personal attacks, we debate unemployment, corruption, poverty and illiteracy," he said. "My inherent decency and largeheartedness should not be construed as weakness by anyone," he added.

The Congress has said that it will complain to the Election Commission. "Subramanian Swamy must take back his comments on Priyankaji. We will complain to the EC as well," Congress leader Haroon Yusuf said.

Swamy was unrepentant. "If they have a problem with what I said, they can approach the court," he said.
