New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh is in the line of fire for his comments on the party's loss in the 2016 Assembly elections in four states. Targeting Singh over his comments calling for a major surgery, Congress leader PC Chacko on Friday said that leaders should express their opinion within the party forum and not speak in public.
"Such opinions coming out in the open, I don't think it is good. Senior leaders have made this statement with good intention but I wish they expressed their opinion within the party," Chacko said.
On the other hand, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha defended Singh saying everyone is rooting for a revamp in the party. "Digvijaya Singh is the most experienced and senior leader within the Congress and like everybody in the party he is very disappointed with the election outcome. I think what basically everybody wants with the Congress party is a very strong revamp which will renergise everyone. This is not something which is being said for the first time."
A few hours after the Congress rout in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Thursday, Singh had called for a 'major surgery'. "Today's results disappointing but not unexpected. We have done enough Introspection shouldn't we go for a Major Surgery?," he tweeted.
Digvijaya's suggestion comes at a time when there is talk of the much delayed reshuffle in the AICC secretariat. It may be carried out soon and indications are that Rahul Gandhi could be elevated as party chief.
Congress was decimated and won only 26 seats in Assam compared to 78 in the outgoing Assembly. Its dream of returning to power for the fourth consecutive term was shattered by the BJP-led alliance. The party was dethroned in Kerala too as the Congress-led UDF won only 50 seats while the LDF bagged the top spot with 89 seats.
