Bangalore: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa will move the Supreme Court for bail after the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday denied her release from prison, her lawyers said.
"After getting the copy of the Karnataka High Court's order, we will approach the Supreme Court," Jayalalithaa's lawyers Kumar and Ramesh Gowda said.
In a huge blow to the AIADMK, the Karnataka HC on Tuesday denied bail to Jayalalithaa in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case. Denying bail to the convicted leader, the court said that there wasn't sufficient ground for awarding bail to her.
"The High Court has correctly rejected the bail for Jayalalithaa," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy, who has been leading the campaign against her, said.
The order came as a huge blow to the 66-year-old, who along with her key aide Sasikala and two others were convicted in the case on September 27.
'No protests please'
The current Tamil Nadu CM Panneerselvam issued a press release asking AIADMK supporters to desist from protests and bandhs after bail was denied to their chief J Jayalalithaa.
He also blamed political rivals for spreading rumours about lack of law and order in Tamil Nadu. "Everything is under control," his statement said.
