New Delhi: In a major jolt to the Aam Aadmi Party government, Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar has been sent to four days of police custody by a court. Tomar was arrested on Tuesday morning for allegedly procuring fake law, and has been booked for cheating and forgery.
"We have respect for the rule of law. We respect whatever the court has ordered. We also have the right to challenge the court's order," said AAP leader Ashutosh.
The arrest was made after the Bar Council of Delhi filed a criminal complaint against his alleged fake law degree. The Bar Council also suspended Tomar's licence.
Tomar has been charged under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating). He has also been charged under IPC sections 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery with purpose of cheating) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy).
Calling it a political vendetta and a bid to destabilise the Delhi government, the AAP had protested outside Vasant Vihar police station where Tomar was taken.
Delhi Police later on Tuesday evening rubbished AAP's allegations of trying to destabilise its government. It said Tomar was held simply on the basis of proof and nothing else.
"We have followed all guidelines while making the arrest. We got a complaint from Bar Council of Delhi Head. It was found that the documents and certificates produced seemed to be forged and based on this complaint we formed teams to look into this matter," police said.
Tomar, who was arrested from his office on Tuesday morning, claimed around 30-40 policemen along with an Additional Commissioner of Police came to his office and he had no other option but to go with them. "Around 30-40 policemen along with an Additional Commissioner of Police came to my office and said that they wanted to speak to me and would talk at my place. I have not been served any arrest warrant. I have not been given any details. They are not giving any details, they are harassing me. This is a political vendetta," Tomar said.
