New Delhi Lok Sabha members on Wednesday demanded Bharat Ratna awards for socialist leaders Jaiprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Kanshi Ram and Karpoori Thakur and for freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad.
Raising the issue in Zero Hour, RJD member Rajesh Ranjan said that the government should recognise the contribution of the four socialist leaders and accord Bharat Ratna to them. SP member Dharmendra Yadav echoed Ranjan's demand.
On the other hand, Bhagwant Mann of AAP said that Bharat Ratna should also be given to Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad and other freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
"The award will not enhance their prestige but will become more respectable (for having been conferred on these personalities)," Mann said, adding that there should not be any politics in the matter.
The government should set up a standing committee to nominate Bharat Ratna awardees, he added.
Meanwhile, SP's Yadav also raised the issue of power situation in Uttar Pradesh and demanded that the Centre should make available funds and adequate quantities of coal for electricity generation in the state.
Congress member KC Venugopal highlighted the issue of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and urged the Centre to take speedy steps to prevent its entry into India. He said that the state governments should be alerted about the threat from the virus.
The Ebola epidemic has affected four countries in West Africa with the World Health Organisation having declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
Also, Kirit Premjibhai Solanki of BJP demanded that the Centre expeditiously take up the project for the beautification of Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat.
